UNESCO and COPEAM again together for gender equality promotion in the media

In January 2013, COPEAM organized, in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office in Rabat, a two-day workshop addressed to the SNRT focused on the representation of women in the media.
This was the first step in a longer-term project, that will involve also other broadcaster members of COPEAM.

The Rabat workshop - which was attended by representatives from different departments of the Moroccan broadcaster and from HACA (High Authority for Audiovisual Communication of Morocco) - was coordinated by UNESCO and COPEAM and focused on the critical analysis and adaptation of the “Indicators of Genres for Media” within SNRT. This preparatory work will be the starting point for the setting up of a feasibility study on the indicators application and, successively, for the assessment of the level of awareness with regard to gender equality, in both the internal policies and the TV and radio contents produced and disseminated by this Organization.

This action is part of the project “Promoting the role of Moroccan public service broadcasters as a platform of free speech for women and as an actor in spreading gender equality culture” and follows an earlier initiative that COPEAM had developed in 2012, again in collaboration with UNESCO: the completion of four case studies - CyBC (Cyprus), JRTV (Jordan), RAI (Italy) and SNRT (Morocco) – on the integration of best practices in the gender equality domain in the business strategies of those TV channels. The results of this survey are included in the UNESCO publication: Gender-sensitive Indicators for Media
