COPEAM partner of the Anna Lindh Foundation for the Mediterranean Journalist Award

COPEAM, as media partner of the Mediterranean Journalist Award and member of the international Jury, took part in the selection of the winning works of the 2011 edition.
The winners, announced by the Jury chaired by Edgar Morin, on 7 October in Monaco, are:

Honorary Awards for Mohamed El Dahshan (Egypt) and Asmaa El Ghoul (Palestine)
Special Award on Democracy and Social Change: Iason Athanasiadis (Greece) for his series of articles "Revolution: Game Over?" published in El Majalla and Abdel Aziz Hali (Tunisia) for his series of articles "Once upon a time, there was two revolutions" published in La Presse
Press Category: Rachel Shabi (UK) for her article "We were looking for a nice, peaceful place near Jerusalem" published in The Guardian, and Mekioussa Chekir (Algeria) for her article "Tolerance and religious unanimity" published in La Tribune.
Television Category: Nada Abdel Salam (Lebanon) for her documentary "The Jews of Lebanon" broadcasted on BBC Arabic
Radio Category: Andrei Popov, Ileana Taroi and Valentina Dumitrescu (Romania) for their co-production "When Romeo meets Julieta" aired on Société Roumaine de Radiodiffusion.

For the 2011 Journalist Award, 222 applications have been received by the Anna Lindh Foundation, representing an increase of 42 % compared to the last year.

59% of candidates are from South-Mediterranean countries, with the greatest participation coming from Egypt, Palestine and Tunisia respectively. The contributions from Tunisian journalists increased significantly in this year’s edition, reaching the highest number of proposals yet in comparison to the previous editions of the Award. In terms of contributions from Europe, Italy-based journalists presented the most of the candidatures, followed by France, Romania, Belgium and Spain.

The participation of female journalists has also improved in this edition, representing 50% of the total applications, so rising to 28 % in comparison with 2010.

The International Jury for the edition of this year has been announced. It will be chaired by the renowned French philosopher Edgar Morin, with jury members including: Gisèle Khoury (Lebanese TV Anchor at Al-Arabiya), Adam Michnik (Editor-in-chief of the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza), Nagla El-Emary (Egyptian TV Anchor at BBC Arabic), Alessandra Paradisi (Head of International Relations at RAI TV and Secretary General of COPEAM), in addition to a representative from Euronews and an expert in Social Media.

The Jury will make its final selection ahead of the International Ceremony to be hosted in Monaco next October by Prince Albert II. Prior to the official Jury meeting, an initial pre-selection process will be carried out so to identify the candidates for the 5 main categories: Printed Press, Online Media, TV Productions, Radio Productions and the Special Award on the theme “Social change and Democracy”.
