COPEAM Residency – The Utopia of the Mediterranean

Matera (Italy), 21-25 September 2016

In partnership with the Fondazione Matera-Basilicata 2019 (promoter of Matera 2019 European Capital of Culture), the Fondazione Sassi and the Italian Representation of the European Commission, and in the framework of the sixth edition of MATERADIO, the festival of RAI Radio 3 devoted this year to “Utopias and Dystopias”, COPEAM organized a journalistic residency which took place from 21 to 25 September in this town  of the Basilicata region (Italy).

The co-producers of the COPEAM weekly radio magazines Kantara and Mediterradio, worked side by side with local journalists and international researchers on the migration topic, crossing their points of view and discussing about the role of the media in the coverage of these issues.

Through interviews to migrants staying in the region, to representatives of the reception structures, as well as to Matera’s inhabitants who had left their city and then came back, the participants dealt with the utopia of departure and migration to get better opportunities.

A documentary of 10’ realized by the journalists during the residency was broadcast on Saturday 24 September at Palazzo Lanfranchi, in the framework of a public debate on migrations moderated by Anna Maria Giordano, host of the programme Radio 3 Mondo, with the participation of Claudio Cappon, COPEAM Secretary General, and Emilio Dalmonte, Vice-Director of the European Commission Representation in Italy.

Following the debate, the recording of special episodes of Mediterradio and Kantara took place in public, with a focus on the festival Materadio, the preparation of Matera as 2019 European Capital of Culture and the utopia.

Finally, on Sunday 25 September, Mr. Cappon spoke about the utopia represented by Europe during the live programme Radio 3 Mondo.
